An iconic heavy bomber, the B-17 was made famous by movie appearances such as Memphis Belle. Originally developed and designed in the 1930ís, it first entered service in 1938.
Flying along side such famous aircraft as the British Lancaster, the B-17 flew thousands of missions over Europe during the bombing campaigns and steadily gain a solid reputation as a sturdy aircraft capable of bringing itís crews home safely.
It became almost an icon when pictures appeared of severely damaged B-17ís still managing to arrive safely back home with massive holes blown out of the fuselage and control surfaces shot away!
